The Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V. (IASS) is an international, interdisciplinary center of excellence located in Potsdam, Germany. The IASS is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal State of Brandenburg and devoted to promoting science and research for global sustainability, particularly in the areas of climate change, the earth system and the development of new technologies and social pathways to sustainability. for the research project
“Climate Engineering and Mitigation: Illusion, Complement, or Substitute? “ Ref. No. CEMICS2-2017-01

Together with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the University of Hamburg, the University of Graz and the IASS are partners in the second phase of the CEMICS project (Climate Engineering and Mitigation: Illusion, Complement, or Substitute?), which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of its 1689 Priority Programme on “Climate Engineering: Risks, Challenges, Opportunities?”. This project is particularly concerned with the question under which ethical and decision-theoretical premises various climate engineering options should be integrated into a climate policy portfolio.
The successful candidate will join the University of Graz (two years) as well as the IASS (one year) and contribute to the further implementation of the CEMICS 2 project. The position is initially for a period of three years. The candidate will work on her/his dissertation in moral or political philosophy linked to key topics in the area of the project. She/he will also be involved in the preparation and post-processing of events linked to the project.

The following qualifications are requested for applicants:

  • Completed Diploma or Master’s Degree in Philosophy
  • Very good command of English (desirable)
  • Ability to work independently
  • Communication and organisational skills and ability to work in teams
  • Interdisciplinary research interest open to collaboration with other fields

The position is to be filled as soon as possible. Salary scheme of the FWF for Doctoral candidates (30 hours) for the two years at the University of Graz. (The minimum salary as stated in the collective agreement and according to the classification scheme is EUR 2045,10 gross/month. This minimum salary may be higher due to previous employment periods eligible for inclusion and other earnings and remunerations). Remuneration for the one year at the IASS in Potsdam will be according to the German public service federal employment system TVöD Bund E 13 scale (50%). Place of work is in Graz, Austria and Potsdam, Germany.
